Description:
Comedy actress Elaine Pantling wants to be taken seriously! Elaine presents a preview of her one-woman show celebrating the life of Leicester suffragette Alice Hawkins before it moves to Curve at the end of the month. "'I have a voice and I will use it' is the clarion call of Alice Hawkins, mother of six, shoe machinist, equal rights activist and suffragette. "Alice joined the band of many women in the fight for their right to vote. Arrested five times, served time in Holloway and Leicester prison. She rubbed shoulders with the Pankhursts and in 1907 set up the Women’s Social and Political Union in Leicester. "2018 marks 100 years since women were granted the right to vote. "Alice Hawkins was a Leicester resident who lived and worked in the Westcotes area and campaigned tirelessly for equality and justice in equal measure. This working class woman was a prominent figure who spoke at meetings in public places at home, in the Midlands and nationally. She cycled to factories across the Midlands to gain support and is listed as one of Leicester's 'Most Radicals'. "Alice and her husband were members of Leicester Secular Society." With Q&A - add your voice to the conversation! All welcome ~~ Elaine talked to us about her plans and research for this show back in 2015: http://lsec.org.uk/calendar/view_entry.php?id=1807 ~~ UPDATE (Oct 2017): There is a report from this event in the October 2017 edition of Leicester Secularist magazine: http://leicestersecularsociety.org.uk/newsletter/
