QED 2017 weekend begins (ext event)
Description:
From email July 2017: Tickets to QED 2017 (https://qedcon.org) are currently on sale! To get your ticket to Europe’s largest weekend celebration of science and reason, visit qedcon.org/tickets. Last year’s QED was the biggest yet, with more than 650 attendees enjoying five parallel tracks of science, reason, critical thinking, live podcast recordings and more. Tickets for this year’s event cost £109 for the full weekend (£75 for students and under 18s). As usual, every single ticket entitles the holder to entry the full programmes for Saturday 14th October and Sunday 15th October, including our popular Saturday night entertainment. Appearing at QED 2017 for your entertainment and enlightenment will be: Dave Alnwick: magician and mentalist whose show Cult of Dave has wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Festival and as part of his UK tour. Dave will be the MC for QED 2017. James Ball: political and investigative journalism for BuzzFeed, The Guardian and the Washington Post. His book Post-Truth: How Bullshit Conquered the World tracks how truth has become a devalued commodity in political discourse and media coverage. Helen Czerski: physicist and oceanographer who has hosted documentaries for the BBC, such as Orbit: Earth’s Extraordinary Journey, Operation Iceberg and The Transit of Venus. Sanal Edamaruku: President of the Indian Rationalist Association. Live on TV in front of an audience of several hundred million, Sanal challenged a guru to kill him using magic. After debunking a weeping statue in Mumbai, Sanal fled India to avoid imprisonment, or worse. David Gorski: surgical oncologist and editor of Science-Based Medicine, where he writtes prolifically about the antivaccine movement, cancer quackery, integrative medicine and more. Emma McClure: skeptical investigator and solicitor specialising in prison law, who explains how over-confidence in the veracity of forensic science can lead to miscarriages of justice. Tim O’Brien: Professor in the School of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Manchester and Associate Director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. Caroline Rance: author of The Quack Doctor, revealing the stories behind patent medicines and health fraud in history, and dispelling popular myths about medicine's long past. Phil Scraton: Emeritus Professor in the School of Law, Queen’s University, Belfast, Director of The Hillsborough Project 1989-95, head of research for the Hillsborough Independent Panel and lead author of the 2013 Report into the Hillsborough disaster. Kavin Senapathy: write and science communicator tackling myths on science, health, medicine, food, biotechnology, parenting, politics, and their intersection. Simon Singh: mathematician, best-selling science writer and founder of the Good Thinking Society, who will give a demonstration of an actual authentic World War II Enigma machine. Carol Tavris: social psychologist and writer whose book Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) explore why people don’t change their minds, simply because evidence says they should. Sophie Wilson: engineer who co-designed the ARM processor, which powers virtually every mobile phone and tablet in the world, with 75 billion sales of ARM powered chips to date. The Parapod: Barry Dodds is a comedian, and a believer in the paranormal; his fellow comedian Ian Boldsworth is a skeptic, exasperated by his friend’s credulity. Together they explore the paranormal, as Barry tries to persuade Ian to believe… unsuccessfully. Inkredulous: hosted by Andy Wilson, Inkredulous is the skeptical-themed comedy panel show that has become a stalwart of QED. Skeptics with a K: the longest-running skeptical podcast in the UK, featuring Mike Hall, Dr Alice Howarth, and Michael Marshall, and produced by the Merseyside Skeptics Society. And much more, still to be announced. If you’re still hungry for more of the QED experience, or if you’re not able to make it to the full weekend, Friday 13th October will be a free full-day Skepticamp event, with short skeptical talks on a broad range of subjects, sourced from the skeptical community. So, don’t delay – grab your QED ticket today and we’ll see you in October! Booking: https://qedcon.org/tickets The QED team
