13:00 [13:00] Alice Hawkins unveiled (ext event)
Description:
Unveiling of statue of Alice Hawkins in Market Square. The statue of Alice Hawkins – who led the women’s suffrage movement in Leicester in the early 1900s – will be unveiled on Sunday 4 February in Leicester’s news Market Square at a public event starting at 2pm. Secular Hall will be open from 1pm. A march to the square will leave the Hall at 1-30pm with the Leicester Secular Society banner among others. There will be songs from Elaine Pantling's show "Alice In Her Shoes" (performed by members of DMU Square Mile Choir, Fosse Singers and Red Leicester Choir, directed by Janet Wood) and a march through Leicester ‘raising the banner in honour of Alice and all the other brave and courageous women and men who fought so that women could win the right to vote’. Black Annis Women's Morris will perform a new dance they've created especially for today's event. Alice and her husband Alfred were members of Leicester Secular Society and we hope to have a good turnout for this event - please share the information widely!
