19:00 Category: LSS/joint public event - Secular Hall[19:00] LSS: Richard Murphy - How to Pay For It? The answer for Activists
How To Pay For It: The Answer to the Question every Activist is asked Public talk + Q&A by Richard Murphy Richard Murphy, author of "The Courageous State" and "The Joy of Tax". He manages and writes the Tax Research blog (http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/) and campaigns against poverty and for tax justice. Richard's talk was arranged after the publication of our Summer 2018 programme. Please watch this page for updates. Richard is an advocate of Modern Monetary Theory, The central notion of which is that government spending drives the economy, providing the money that will later be collected as tax - not the other way round. This has big implications for the 'affordability' of public spending projects and our attitudes to the government's ever tightening austerity programme. The purpose of the talk is to gain and share an understanding of this idea, and its implications for the many social, political and environmental campaigns we promote. It's not pushing a party line, but will no doubt provoke some probing audience questions about, for example, ring-fencing National Insurance to fund the NHS, the views of the Positive Money campaign, and inevitably, Brexit. This is a public meeting jointly hosted by Leicester Secular Society, Leicester and District Trades Union Council, Leicester Friends of the Earth, Save Our NHS Leicestershire and Leicester Social Forum. All are welcome. To find this page again quickly, go to tinyurl.com/HowToPayForIt Flyer: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DfBhpHQVQAEmktW.jpg
