Conference: Sharia, Segregation and Secularism (ext event)
"Join notable secularists and veteran women's rights campaigners for a conference on Sharia, Segregation and Secularism at a spectacular venue in central London on Sunday 25 November 2018. "The conference will raise key issues surrounding religious arbitration, the veil and gender segregation at schools and universities, including as part of the religious-Right's assault on women's rights. It will also highlight the voices of people on the frontlines of resistance, the gains made by secularists both in the UK and internationally, and the importance of secularism as a minimum precondition for equality. Challenges that secularists continue to face and priorities for continued collective action will also be addressed. "The conference will mark the tenth anniversary of the One Law for All Campaign for equality irrespective of background, beliefs and religions ( http://onelawforall.org.uk )." 18:00 Category: LSS - Secular Hall - Public event[18:30] LSS: Dorothy Francis - Cooperatives – Business for Change
Cooperatives – Business for Change Dorothy Francis Co-operatives – Business for Change Dorothy Francis One billion people, 7 principles and a world of change; discover how co-operatives influence society for good. A co-operative is an autonomous organisation of people who come together to meet common economic, social and cultural aims through a jointly owned, democratically controlled enterprise. However, what do these words mean in practice? What do co-operatives do? Who works in co-operatives and why? How do co-operatives differ from other business models? And how do they deliver business for good? Dorothy is a co-director of CASE, an enterprise agency which has supported co-operative development in Leicestershire since 1982. Dorothy’s commitment and dedication to the co-operative movement was recognised in the 2016 Birthday Honours List when she received the Queens’ Award for Enterprise Promotion; an award which is only given to one person each year. She was the first woman of colour to receive the award and the first person in Leicestershire. Dorothy received an MBE in 2017 for enterprise and services to the communities of Leicestershire and produced a hat trick in 2018 when she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Leicester for services to the co-operative movement. Free entry with tea and biscuits All welcome.
