Dr Nikos Sotirakopoulos "Towards a new political spectrum: individualism vs tribalism" Is tribal group-thinking a significant characteristic of today’s bitter political culture? How did this happen, and is there an alternative? A paradoxical phenomenon can be observed in many Western societies: in times when the political categories of Left and Right are almost indistinguishable, with some form of interventionist mixed economy being the consensus, the degree of partisanship the in public sphere is reaching a peak. These bitter altercations are on issues that have to do more with culture, identity, lifestyle, and a sense of morality. The various shades of identity seem the main source of political affiliation; the only question seems to be what is the group that one will identify with. The speech will examine how we ended up in this bitter political climate and whether there is an alternative. Dr Sotirakopoulos is a lecturer in sociology and criminology at York St John University Free entry. Tea and biscuits provided. Donations towards costs welcome.
