Description:
Good Jew/Bad Jew, Good Minority/Bad Minority: How Antisemitism and Racism Became Selective Keith Kahn-Harris These days both racists and anti-racists are becoming increasingly selective in choosing the minorities they love and hate. The antisemitism controversy in the Labour Party is a symptom of this. Today, lifelong self-defined anti-racists are accused of antisemitism and life-long Jew-haters proclaim their love of Israel. In his book ‘Strange Hate: Antisemitism, Racism and the Limits of Diversity’ Keith attempts to unpick the reasons for such strange developments. In this lecture, Keith draws on case studies of antisemitism controversies in the UK and US in order to argue that we are witnessing the rise of ‘selective anti/semitism’ – love for 'good Jews' combined with hate for 'bad Jews'. This is part of emerging selectivity in both racism and anti-racism. Recognising and combatting this selective hatred requires asking difficult questions about how it might be possible to live together in diverse societies. -- Secular Hall is open from 6pm-9pm on most Sunday evenings. We collect food and toiletry items for asylum seekers – please try to donate if you are able.
