Description:
Annual Human Rights Lecture (joint LSS/Leicester Human Rights Festival event) "Youth Strikes, Global Justice and the Climate Election" Leicester Secular Society annual Human Rights Lecture Two Leicester climate strikers, Imran Mulla and Joseph Faire, explain the youth strike movement, the Green New Deal and the road ahead on climate action. Joseph and Imran are two founders of the local Youth Climate Strike movement (Climate Strike Leicester). They will provide a history of the youth strike movement globally and its story in Leicester – and they will explain what our political parties have to offer on climate action. As the reality of climate breakdown becomes impossible to deny, the threat of eco-nationalism and the co-opting of the environmentalist movement by national populists is seeming ever more plausible. Our speakers will explain this danger and outline a path forward for a Green New Deal that ensures global climate justice, before giving way for a general discussion with the audience. In the run up to the most important general election in a generation – and one that will determine how our nation responds to the climate crisis – this talk could not be more pressing. All welcome - admission free. This event is part of the annual Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, Leicester taking place at various venues, 4-10 December 2019 - see http://leicestersecularsociety.org.uk/calendar/view_entry.php?id=2463 ------------- Secular Hall is open from 6pm-9pm on most Sunday evenings. We collect food and toiletry items for asylum seekers – please try to donate if you are able.
