13:00 [13:30] Phil Armstrong: How can governments pay for public services? (ext event)
"Changing the debate about the economy requires a better understanding of how money works so that we can address the big challenges we face." Phil Armstrong's event is titled "Challenging the narrative about how governments pay for public services" but that's too long for our calendar app. At a time of great change and political, social and environmental uncertainty both nationally and globally it is even more vital to challenge the economic orthodoxy which has informed the political agendas of successive governments both on the right and the left for decades. GIMMS (Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies) Associate Member Phil Armstrong* will be exploring why there has been a fundamental shift in the way we talk about the public sector and how instead of looking at how best to address the climate crisis, provide essential universal basic services and tackle poverty and inequality, political debate centres first and foremost on the question of how the government will pay for them. Changing this debate about the economy requires a better understanding of how money works so that we can address the big challenges we face. Join the GIMMS team in Northampton on 28th March to find out more! Details and Free tickets: https://gimms.org.uk/event/challenging-economic-narrative/ NB: This event is not at Secular Hall and is not a LSS event. Please check the organisers' website for updates. *Phil is a strong advocate of the need for pluralism in economics the subject that he has spent the last 38 years teaching. Phil is a Post Keynesian and a strong advocate of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) which he believes provides both powerful insights into the way the economy works and how progressive economic policy can be put into practice. ---- Richard Murphy gave a talk at Secular Hall entitled "How to Pay For It? The answer for Activists" in July 2018 - details at http://tinyurl.com/HowToPayForIt
