Description:
ZOOM TALK - Cynthia Brown: 'Industry and ardour'– a history of allotments in Leicester The allotment movement had its origins in the countryside in response to changes in agriculture that reduced the amount of land available for cultivation by rural labourers - but by the 1840s allotments were also a feature of urban areas. This illustrated talk will consider the origins and subsequent development of allotments in Leicester, including social, moral and cultural dimensions which went well beyond the production of food itself. Cynthia Brown is a social historian and author of several publications on the history of Leicester, including Wharf Street Revisited, Leicester Voices and regular articles for the Leicestershire Historian. She also teaches adult courses for the Workers’ Educational Association, and is an Honorary Vice President of the Leicester Group, Victorian Society You are welcome to participate for free, but will need the joining information in our weekly email.
