18:00 Category: LSS - Public event (not at Secular Hall)[18:30] LSS: Ian Rotherham - Climate Change and Biodiversity Extinction
ZOOM TALK - 'Climate Change, Biodiversity Extinction and the Rest - Time for Despair or for Hope and Action?' Professor Ian Rotherham With gloom and doom hanging over people and communities faced by climate change, flooding, and biodiversity extinction, is there any room for optimism? Undoubtedly, humanity, nature and the planet are in the inexorable grip of a major crisis and there is more than a little reason for serious concern. So with wildlife species being lost and both waters and temperatures rising, what can people do to help alleviate or even stop the declines? Thinking global but acting local is perhaps the key and that may begin with approaches to so-called 'rewilding'. From the city-centres and the window boxes to the seashores and the mountaintops, we need to rewild the countryside; and also our bodies and minds. Positive action to redress the balance can help change the world for the better. Suggested reading: - Rotherham, I.D. (2014) Eco-History: A Short History of Conservation and Biodiversity. The White Horse Press, Cambridge. - Rotherham, I.D. (2017) Shadow Woods: A Search for Lost Landscapes. Wildtrack Publishing, Sheffield. Ian Rotherham is Professor of Environmental Geography at Sheffield Hallam University. He is the author of over 500 academic papers and articles, 50 or more books, and around 1,000 popular articles in newspapers and magazines. He works with community groups, conservation bodies, and government agencies in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and with local, regional and national media. His work includes ecology, countryside heritage, alien species, environmental change, flooding history, and rewilding, and he has written on woodlands, peat bogs, fens, and forests.
