Description:

To speak or even utter a word on your demeaning situation during the pandemic as an undocumented migrant or as a person currently in the legal migration process and living under the hostile environment of the British people is already a radical performance. Since the lockdown and the height of the public health crisis in March, undocumented migrants and those who are in legal process are suffering because of the lack of access to institutional help and public support, while being silenced by the more powerful narratives with platforms that politicize and criminalize migrants. At the onset of the lockdown in the UK in 2020, Status Now 4 All, a network of almost ninety organizations, labour unions, and community organizations called for the regularisation of all undocumented migrants and those in the legal process living the country. Since then, the network has relentlessly campaigned on the streets, in Downing Street and in online platforms. Members and supporters write to government officials, an Early Day Motion was tabled in Parliament and we met with the Mayor of London. Using the study of Filipino women working as domestic workers conducted by Ella Parry-Davies 'A Chance to Feel Safe: Precarious Filipino Migrants amid the UK’s Corona Virus Outbreak' released in June as a springboard for narration and exposition, this lecture will emphasize the immediacy of regularization of all undocumented migrants and those in the legal process as a public health concern, reveal the narratives of sufferings among those who are living in precarity under the Government-imposed lockdown, and explore the many voices calling for status now for all in the UK — the radicalization of a woman without a paper speaking to the void as a controlling metaphor. Rogelio Braga is an exiled playwright, novelist, essayist, publisher, and a human rights activist from the Philippines. He published two novels, a collection of short stories, and a book of plays before he left the archipelago in 2018. He was a fellow of the Asian Cultural Council for theatre in Southeast Asia in 2016. His first play on the human rights situation in Duterte Philippines, 'Miss Philippines', written entirely in English is currently under development commissioned by the New Earth Theatre in London. He co-chairs Status Now 4 All and is a political asylum seeker. **Please help by spreading the word about this important lecture – to individuals or organisations who might be interested.
