"I would like to invite you, and other members of your group, to the Sunrise Conference 2010 which we are hosting next month. It focuses on skills, leadership and activism for leading humanist groups, bringing together leaders from across the country to share knowledge and experience.

"The conference is taking place 4-5 September at the University of Leeds. More information can be found on the conference website at

including a list of the guest speakers [including Mike Lake of Derby Secularists and Humanists] we have already confirmed.

"We are also hoping that some of your members may be interested in volunteering as humanist chaplains. This entails providing pastoral support to non-believers in institutions such as universities, hospitals and prisons. Full training will be provided at the conference and on going support will be provided via our support network launching in September."

Description:

Rally commemorating the Burston School Strike (1914-1939)
Teachers Kitty and Tom Higdon were sacked from their posts at the local Church of England school, following disputes regarding conditions for the children at the school and their low paid labourer families. Although class/economic issues lay at the heart of the dispute, Church privilege was a major aggravating factor.
The dismissed Higdons set up their own school on the village green, and this was supported by the villagers for over 20 years. The school is now a museum, and and the Trades Union Congress organises a commemorative rally in Burston every year, usually on the first Sunday in September.

We start the season with a discussion on the recent Richard Dawkins 'Age of Reason' on Channel More4.
Two programmes have been broadcast so far and the third and last one will be broadcast on Wednesday 2nd Sept.
We will concentrate on his first programme on 'Faith Schools'
Some extracts will be shown and it is hoped that this will both inform and lead to discussion.

Women Chainmakers Centenary Festival at the Black Country Living Museum.
Recalling the fight of the Cradley Heath Women Chainmakers, who in 1910 went on strike for ten weeks and were successful in winning the first ever minimum wage.

Join the “Protest the Pope” Campaign in this large-scale march against the State Visit of Pope Ratzinger in the UK.

The protest march will assemble at 1pm at Hyde Park Corner.

It will then proceed through central London via Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Haymarket, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall.

At the arrival point, opposite Downing Street, on Richmond Terrace, there will be the final Rally with speeches.
