Headstrong Meeting.

Members and visitors are invited to raise any matter they wish for friendly informal discussion.

We name these meetings after the Headstrong Club in 18th century Lewes where Tom Paine (whose bust is one of those on Secular Hall) and friends discussed the affairs of the day.

Why we want the vote - campaigns for female suffrage and why they eventually succeeded.

Cynthia Brown

In February 1918 women over 30 were able to vote for the first time in elections to the British Parliament.

Why did it take so long for women to get a vote, why was it granted in 1918 – and what did they do with it once they had it?

Cynthia Brown is a historian and adult tutor for the Workers’ Educational Association. She is a trustee of the Oral History Society, and former manager of the East Midlands Oral History Archive.

Max Malik

Max’s first novel, The Butterfly Hunter, won the Best Published Novel Award in 2011 from the Brit Writers Awards.

The main strand running through all his writing has been the aim of helping to create a more tolerant and just society based on rationalist and humanistic values.
