LSS: Abderrahmane Sissako's film Timbuktu

Description: Unfortunately Deborah Lavin's talk 'Political Skulduggery' has had to be re-scheduled [Update: 18 June 2017 http://lsec.org.uk/calendar/view_entry.php?id=2025 - Ed].

Instead we are showing the Abderrahmane Sissako's film 'Timbuktu', in which the people of the Malian city struggle against an oppressive regime of terror inflicted upon them by invading Jihadists who prohibit every enjoyable aspect of life.

A subtle film, tragic, but also beautiful and often funny, it was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award last year.

Political Skulduggery

One of the illustrious speakers at the opening of Secular Hall in 1882 was Charles Bradlaugh, and he is the subject of this talk.

Deborah Lavin asks 'what kept Charles Bradlaugh from taking his seat in parliament - Atheism, Republicanism, Birth Control or something else altogether?'

Today Bradlaugh is recognised as an important figure in the history of our parliamentary democracy - see this promo for an earlier presentation of Lavin's talk https://www.parliament.uk/about/living-heritage/evolutionofparliament/2015-parliament-in-the-making/get-involved1/2015-parliament-in-the-making-events/political-skulduggery-what-kept-charles-bradlaugh-mp-from-taking-his-seat-in-parliament--/
