LSS: Cynthia Brown - ‘Why we want the vote’

Description: Why we want the vote - campaigns for female suffrage and why they eventually succeeded.

Cynthia Brown

In February 1918 women over 30 were able to vote for the first time in elections to the British Parliament.

Why did it take so long for women to get a vote, why was it granted in 1918 – and what did they do with it once they had it?

Cynthia Brown is a historian and adult tutor for the Workers’ Educational Association. She is a trustee of the Oral History Society, and former manager of the East Midlands Oral History Archive.
