LSS: Luca Fenoglio - violence and racism in Mussolini's Italy

Description: ZOOM TALK - 8th

Luca Fenoglio

Hidden in plain sight: violence and racism in Mussolini's Italy

The lecture will discuss the violent and racist policies that Mussolini's Italy implemented domestically and abroad before and during WWII.

The violent and racist reality of Mussolini’s policies in Italy proper, in the African colonies and in the territories occupied during the Second World War have become common knowledge among students of Italian Fascism. Yet, an image of Mussolini’s dictatorship as somewhat milder than Hitler’s and Stalin’s deadly regimes is often still prevalent among the broader public. This lecture aims to correct this misguided image. It will offer an overview of the last thirty years of historical research into Fascist racism and violence, and reflect on the significance of Italian Fascism in the broader context of interwar Europe.

Dr Luca Fenoglio is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the School of History Politics and International Relations and a member of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies of the University of Leicester. His research has mainly dealt with Fascist Italy’s policies towards Jewish refugees in the occupied territories during the Second World War. On this subject, he has authored four essays and a book.
