Richard Hopper, Secretary of Leicester Secular Society, explains:

At present, the principal civic event on the occasion of the election of the new Lord Mayor is the annual civic service. This is a church service for a single religion, and people from other faiths and those having no religious belief cannot freely contribute. Far more appropriate would be to have a celebration of the city to which people from all backgrounds could contribute. Please support our petition calling on the council to establish such an event.

This is a formal petition, which will be submitted to the council for consideration in January 2011. Please get as many people to sign the petition as you can. Maybe you could ask friends or family members to sign? The more signatures we collect, the more impact the petition will have, so get collecting.
